Thumbs up to This Musical

Musicals have never really been my all time favorites. I do like musicals; I have just never been able to be sucked in by one. I would say the same thing about My Fair Lady, but that would be a lie. The film adaptation My Fair Lady, directed by George Cukor and based on George Bernard Shaw’s 1913 Pygmalion, was fantastic in my eyes. I would have to say that I was most intrigued by the constant interactions between Eliza Doolittle, played by Audrey Hepburn, and Henry Higgins, played by Rex Harrison.

The two main characters in the movie were so good. The actors did such a great job portraying them, and they just worked off of each other so well. I would say that Audrey Hepburn, with her completely beautiful appearance, really has an outstanding voice as well. She did really well portraying Eliza Doolittle. Eliza was essentially two roles; the first, being the poor flower girl, and the second being the well-spoken lady. It would be hard to play two parts in one film, but Hepburn did such a great job at both parts that it seemed almost easy. Eliza Doolittle was a great character being portrayed by a great actress.

Professor Higgins was probably my favorite character. He was so witty and charming; it was just hard not to like him. Rex Harrison was perfect for this role. He himself is handsome and pretty smooth in a sense. I would have to say that the role probably came pretty natural to him. Professor Higgins is the character who teaches phonetics, and he winds up teaching Eliza as a bet. Higgins was so hard on Eliza, but it was very humorous the way he did it. It would be hard to take a girl off the streets and teach her proper English, but apparently not impossible. Henry Higgins is my favorite character in this film, and Rex Harrison really was the right actor for the job.

My Fair Lady is filled with laughter, romance, and plenty of fun. I was very pleased with this film and I would say that I would probably watch it again. As I stated previously, it is hard for me to get involved with musicals. This one was just really well done. Being as it is so well done; I had no problem enjoying it in its entirety. I say, “Thumbs up to this movie.”
