The actors cast in My Fair Lady, Alan J. Lerner and Frederick Loewe's 1964 musical adaptation of George Bernard Shaw's 1913 Pygmalion, clearly enjoyed playing the roles of their characters. Thanks in part to the director, George Cukor, the actors gave excellent performances throughout the entire film. All of the actors let the attitude of their respective characters overtake them and performed as if they had been transformed into their characters. Although all of the actors were great, the three performances that stand out the most were those given by Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, and Audrey Hepburn.
Rex Harrison, playing the role of Professor Henry Higgins, was able to come across as the hard-headed and prideful man needed to in order to play the part. Harrison also gave his character the stubborn attitude expected to come from Professor Higgins during his performance.
Stanley Holloway was cast to play the part of Alfred P. Doolittle. Although his character only appeared in a few scenes, Holloway gave his character a joyful and energetic attitude, while singing and dancing around on the set. For a man who was poor and living on a day-to-day basis, the musical performances given by Holloway made the man seem very jolly and happy.
The best performance, however, was given by Audrey Hepburn, the actress cast to play the part of Eliza Doolittle. Hepburn's physical characteristics gave her the ability to transform her character from the homely looking flower girl on the street into the very sophisticated looking young woman presented at the Embassy ball. Hepburn gave the character the tired, worn-out look after spending many nights practicing and learning and also the energetic radiance of a woman out to show Henry Higgins just what she was capable of now that she had become a cultured and phonetically educated woman.
The actors in the cinematic production of My Fair Lady gave very joyful performances, making it appear to the audience that they enjoyed playing the roles of these characters. The delightful performances of these talented actors gave the musical an overall energetic feeling that made the audience feel energetic as well.
